Reserva Geológica Sarmiento
(Province of Chubut) At 156 km from Commodoro Rivadavia is the Sarmiento Geologic Reservation that has 24 hectares and it harbors a forest of 75 million years with trunks of up to 2m in diameter knocked down on the floor. The region seems a lonely extraterrestrial territory. This region that at some time was inhabited by monkeys, turtles, and crocodiles, was covered by the waters of a warm current coming from Brazil.

Petrified forest (36 K)

The hills with layers of different colours were formed by the silts brought by the sea: the green layers are made of silica and aluminum, the reddish layers and gray or black and rosy were formed by arcillo-sandy banks that also contained quartz. The petrification is a process in which the organic matter of a plant or animal is supplanted by mineral matter. The fabrics are substituted by silica, calcium carbonate, and iron that make the trunks seem stones.
