Punta Tombo
Punta Tombo (open from September to April) is 182 km southwards of Puerto
Madryn and it is the most important reservation of Magellanic Penguins
in the world (in full season there are more than 1million penguins) to
get there, it is necessary to take the Provincial Route 3 towards Rawson.
After traveling 70 km and having passed the city of Trelew,
you arrive at the crossing of the Provincial Route 1 (gravelled road )
which leads to Punta Tombo. The penguins arrive for reproduction in September
and they stay there until March. One can observe them here walking along
their " streets " and one can see them fish on the coast. It is a narrow
and stony fringe of land but which has very wide beaches and with a gentle
slope towards the sea, this important characteristic is used by the penguins
to build their nests.
